Mammoth Mountain Opens Eight Days Early: California's Ski Season Starts Thursday

·By Jameson Lythgoe · WorldEye News

California's ski season starts a week early, and it starts at Mammoth. Mammoth Mountain will open for the 2026-27 season on Thursday, November 5, eight days earlier than planned, the Ikon Pass announced in a release on Tuesday, November 3. The resort's original scheduled opening day was Friday, November 13.

The reason is straightforward: more than a foot of fresh snow fell on the mountain over the past week, and temperatures cold enough for sustained snowmaking let crews finish preparing the lower mountain ahead of schedule. The early opening leapfrogs Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, which confirmed a Friday, November 6 opening only a day earlier — so Mammoth, not Tahoe, takes first chair on the West Coast this season.

▸ What opens on Thursday

Opening day is deliberately small. Mammoth will run its Lower Panorama Gondola and Broadway Express (Chair 1), with access to three trails: Broadway, Silver Tip and Rusty's. Lifts are scheduled to start spinning at 8:30 a.m., with opening-day celebrations running until 4 p.m., including the traditional first-chair banner breakthrough and a toast to the new season at the bottom of Broadway Express.

There is an explicit caveat for beginners: beginner terrain and beginner lessons will not be available at opening. The three open trails sit off Chair 1 on the lower mountain, and the resort says it will continue to expand terrain as soon as conditions allow — the standard early-season pattern, but one first-time visitors should plan around rather than discover at the ticket window.

▸ A foot of snow, and snow guns doing the rest

The weekend storm did the headline work, but the release credits the snowmaking crews with closing the gap. Snowmaking teams were able to take full advantage of the colder temperatures over the past few days to get the mountain ready for an early opening, Emily van Greuning, communications director of Mammoth Resorts, said in the release.

That combination — natural snow on the upper mountain, machine snow holding the base — is what makes a November 5 opening credible at a resort whose summit reaches 11,053 feet in California's Eastern Sierra, near the town of Mammoth Lakes. Mammoth is known for one of the longest seasons in the state, and an early start extends it at the front end.

▸ The season is assembling, resort by resort

Mammoth joins a short list of Ikon Pass destinations already open: Arapahoe Basin in Colorado opened on October 28, Lake Louise in Canada opened on November 1 — five days ahead of its own schedule, as WorldEye reported in Lake Louise's early opening story — and Zermatt in Switzerland is open for glacier skiing. Mt. Rose follows on Friday, and the rest of California's resorts mostly wait until late November or early December.

For opening-day skiers, the resort is laying on complimentary coffee and cocoa while supplies last, a free Mammoth beanie for the first people in the lift line, music on the Tusks Sundeck from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and a season toast at 11 a.m. None of that changes the essential fact of the day: eight extra days of season, earned from one storm and a cold snap.

▸ Check the mountain before you drive

Early-season openings can shrink as fast as they appear if temperatures swing, so the live picture matters more than the announcement. WorldEye's ski webcams collection carries the resort cameras that show what the lower mountain actually looks like this morning, and the 2026-27 ski season opening dates guide tracks the resorts still counting down to their own first chairs.

Thursday's opening is also the first test of the season for WorldEye's Powder Pass ski coverage — opening-day conditions, snow stakes and lift status are exactly the signals it is built to follow as more California terrain comes online through November.
